Han Feng’s sex diary caused a lot of uproar in China. He is an official from the Guangxi tobacco monopoly bureau, who allegedly wrote daily diary entries describing his sexual involvement with many of his colleages, along with acts of receiving bribes. Then these entries started spreading on the internet. The disciplinary officials and the investigators were getting first-hand accounts of his misbehavior from these entries. Despite a year long attempt at cleansing by the censors in their urge to remove any pornographic data, these entries caused many stark reactions.
Here below are some of his journal entries from the year of 2007. I just wanted to give you a glimpse. Like Hanhan, I do not judge the tobacco chief for having sexual affairs. These kinds of private affairs should not be stolen or uploaded by third parties. At the same time these entries are an eye-opener indeed. Should they be banned or be squeezed back inside a pandora’s box? Let’s think positively. Let’s praise the tobacco chief for offering a poetic alternative to vulgar pornography, as well as thinking earnestly about his health. But if he is cutting one thing in his life, it should be alcohol rather than blow jobs.

The new Han Han magazine has arrived…. Although there’s not a single advertisment in the magazine, it is known as the most generous publication in China—paying each of the authors 2000 RMB per 1000 words (as you can see from the picture above, that’s basically all of them).
The magazine is a nice mixture of short novels, essays, photographs, commics, etc. But it was quite an disapointment for me not seeing the orginal cool cover picture on the actual copies.
As I look through the magazine, I found the following excerpt very informative. It is It’s from Han Han’s own article I WANT TO TALK TO THIS WORLD (我想和這個世界談談 wo xiang he zhe ge shi jie tan tan). Here is the rough translation (Thank you Katrien for editing it for me):
All summer long I have been writing my new book People’s Pornography: Sex and Surveillance on the Chinese Internet for Intellect Books. C: Can I ask a question? Assuming that you and your lover are both cosplayers, when you cosplay two characters in love with each other, would you feel that you two are actually in love?
F: Actually I can’t completely split the real love from the love in fiction. Sometimes you feel that the character you are going to cosplay is so similar to yourself. And your partner is also cosplaying a character that is very similar to him. When you two are cosplaying, maybe you will feel that you are performing real life. It’s convincing.
K: If you and your partner can both accept the characters, it will be very powerful. For instance, when my current partner first met me, I was actually dressed up like the character Libidot (not a cosplay character) I was so worried that he would not like me as my real self, but it turned out to be ok. He just really liked me dressed up like that. If you two can accept each other’s characters and love each other, it can be very powerful.
F: I often wonder whether you like the person or you just like the character. It’s hard to say. The experience of playing roles is also influence by our relationship.
K: Maybe you start with cosplaying together, and then it moves into other things, and then everything. That’s life.
C: If your favorite character is cosplayed by someone that you don’t like, could you become very annoyed?
F: Of course. I can’t understand why you would cosplay that character if you are not so good. But we should at least respect them if they love the character too.
The new issue of Intersections on Yaoi, Boys Love, or gay animations for girls, is out, and it is called ‘Japanese Transnational Fandoms and Female Consumers,’ guest-edited by Mark McLelland. I am very grateful to Mark McLelland and Carolyn Brewer for including my documentary On The Japanese Doll Complex. It fulfills a long-awaited desire to publish quirky and artistic types of products in academic journals.
Ting Liu’s article ‘Conflicting Discourses on Boys’ Love and Subcultural Tactics in Mainland China and Hong Kong,’ talks about censorship and shows that fans of Yaoi animations in Shanghai protested against one of the Internet crackdowns on pornography and their favorite websites.They turned an officially sanctified ’scribble wall’ into a ‘rotten wall.’
As Liu writes: “After the state launched the anti-pornography campaign in April, danmei participants turned a much bigger tuyaqiang (涂鸦墙 the scribble wall) at the East-Asian Comic and Animation Tongren Convention (东亚动漫同人大会) in Shanghai into a huge fuqiang (腐墙 rotten wall) in May 2007. Participants left messages such as ‘The party says we should build a road of tongren with Chinese characters, whereby BL is the predominant, with GL as a supplement,’ ‘The single spark of BL can start a prairie fire!,’ and ‘One who does not have danmei characteristics is not a person! One who does not have SM characters is not a good person!’

It is always hard to find out what precisely is going on the Chinese Internet, but certainly the news about another major crackdown on vulgar and pornographic content was depressing. These kinds of drastic actions are not so common in Hong Kong and seem to be out of place here. Still I was interviewed a few days ago by a journalist at Baptist University about a proposal by a HK parental organization to blacklist websites to protect youth from “falling more deeply into immoral behavior” (her words). Then today I read the news about Chinese protesters dressing up historical art nudes to criticize Beijing’s ongoing surveillance and censorship. Maybe this action and extensive list of submissions is a sign of relief? The Chinese war on netporn seems to be massive and neverending, but then it has made room for a sexy counter-culture.
