The new issue of Intersections <\/span><\/em>on Yaoi, Boys Love, <\/span><\/em>or gay animations for girls, is out, and it is called \u2018Japanese Transnational Fandoms and Female Consumers,<\/span><\/a>\u2019 guest-edited by Mark McLelland. I am very grateful to Mark McLelland and Carolyn Brewer for including my documentary On The Japanese Doll Complex.<\/span><\/a> It fulfills a long-awaited desire to publish quirky and artistic types of products in academic journals. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ting Liu\u2019s article \u2018Conflicting Discourses on Boys\u2019 Love and Subcultural Tactics in Mainland China and H<\/span><\/a>ong Kong,\u2019<\/span><\/a> talks about censorship and shows that fans of Yaoi <\/span><\/em>animations in Shanghai protested against one of the Internet crackdowns on pornography and their favorite websites.They turned an officially sanctified \u2019scribble wall\u2019 into a \u2018rotten wall.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n

As Liu writes: \u201cAfter the state launched the anti-pornography campaign in April, danmei<\/span><\/em> participants turned a much bigger tuyaqiang<\/span><\/em> (<\/span>\u6d82\u9e26\u5899<\/span> the scribble wall) at the East-Asian Comic and Animation Tongren<\/span><\/em> Convention (<\/span>\u4e1c\u4e9a\u52a8\u6f2b\u540c\u4eba\u5927\u4f1a<\/span>) in Shanghai into a huge fuqiang<\/span><\/em> (<\/span>\u8150\u5899<\/span> rotten wall) in May 2007. Participants left messages such as \u2018The party says we should build a road of tongren<\/span><\/em> with Chinese characters, whereby BL is the predominant, with GL as a supplement,\u2019 \u2018The single spark of BL can start a prairie fire!,\u2019 and \u2018One who does not have danmei<\/span><\/em> characteristics is not a person! One who does not have SM characters is not a good person!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n
