I met with 15 students for a two-hour recorded session about Internet culture, social networks, pornography &\u00a0censorship politics. We were probing and\u00a0discussing ideas about the power of netizens and the government war on pornography. Many views and anecdotes were exchanged.\u00a0\u00a0As much as Chinese people\u00a0know how to\u00a0cope wity with\u00a0government surveillance, they also use the web to spy meticulously on each other’s\u00a0sex lives or sexual mishaps. The urge to snoop around and publicize\u00a0this kind of “dirt” is perhaps as deep as the desire for porn or romance. There is the recent case of tabacco chief Han Feng, whose sex diary was uploaded by the angry husband of one\u00a0Han’s lovers. Later his diary was forwarded online and his political life and corruptions were\u00a0scrutinized by a squad of\u00a0online vigilantes, whose actions led his dismissal a party official. This chinese “human flesh search engine”\u00a0is like a netizens’ mob\u00a0who collaborate online to\u00a0illegally investigate and stalk a person.\u00a0They then take action against and harass this person in real life. which can have far-reaching consequences.\u00a0Han has meanwhile sued the uploader of his diary and rumors now abound that it was one of his political rivals\u00a0who hired a hacker to steak Han’s diary.\u00a0This is an instance of netizens power and cyber bullying, but\u00a0in many cases\u00a0the steamy mob gropes for petty details about people’s sexuality–as if they area signs\u00a0of larger problems. But maybe they are just what they are, and the mob\u00a0might as well leave these details\u00a0alone &\u00a0and yes–get a sex life of their own!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
