Deepfake Sex Research

I am developing a new research project about the rise of sex/gender-focused deepfakes as an instrument of online creativity and exploitation. Deepfakes are synthetic media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else’s facial features and speech patterns. It is one of the most powerful techniques to manipulate or generate visual and aural content with a high potential to a similarity to the originals. The commodification of this technology has also led to a spectacular and systematic sexualization of public figures. The technology has been used for purposes of humor, political satire and artistic bravery, but typifies a shift in in social media towards hatred and rampant misogyny. The project will discuss deepfake creativity from the point of view of anti-feminist movements and seek ways of redeeming the technology towards sex-positive notions of intimacy, pleasure and healing.
